What was the stench in the hospital basement...
Just what on earth was that stench in the basement of the hospital? The horrible stench in the basement of Wellington Hospital, (New Zealand) basement was discovered - dead body laid in mortuary cool store for two months. The patient had died of natural causes in a hospital ward after a long illness, according to a report about the 2004 incident - obtained under the Official Secrets Act. After the death, the patient's listed contact people and the Public Trust were informed so that arrangements could be made for a funeral. This did not happen and it was not till two months later that the body was discovered after an orderly noticed the terrible stench in the cool room. He searched amongst the rubbish but was unsuccessful. He was joined by the clinical coordinator and together they looked inside the mortuary refrigerator, which lies between the two areas that had been searched previously. There was one covered body but no obvious smell. They mopped the area with disinfectant and reviewed the area an hour later. While the smell was still strong, the toe tag was checked and found to have been there for two months. After all this, and believing the smell was from the decomposing body, it was found it actually came from a rubbish truck. A systemic review has since been made to ensure that better checks are made on bodies in the mortuary.
