Ulster Defence Force hands in its guns...
A sign of the times - the UVF gives up violence... The Ulster Volunteer Force, the UVF, an outlawed Northern Ireland group that attacked the Catholic minority for decades, has renounced its violent ways. The UVF's elder statesman, 73 year old Gusty Spence, read a prepared statement at a Belfast news conference that saidthe organisation, which has 500 members, would cease to exist as an illegal organisation and assume a 'non-military', civilised role. The peace in Northern Ireland has been given further support from another unlikely quarter. Every contribution to the peace process is valuable in the longterm development of Northern Ireland. Handing in its weapons and renouncing its violent ways - this is a huge call for a Protestant group who hated Catholics to such a degree. |
