Turkey could invade northern Iraq to attack Kurdish rebels there... Turkey's prime minister has stated that Turkey could invade northern Iraq if talks with the US after todays general elections are unsuccesful in coming up with measures to counter Kurdish guerrillas.The Iraqi prime minister, Nouri al-Maliki, was expected to visit Turkey to discuss the demand that Baghdad cracks down on the Kurdistan Workers Party(PKK) rebels in northern Iraq. Erdogan's ruling party is expected to win a majority of seats in the Turkish elections. The problem of how to deal with the PKK. was an election issue. How the Iraqis could do anything against the PKK is doubtful, when they can't handle problems in the rest of their country. The Kurds in Iraq and Turkey want their own homeland state - a Kurdistan - that is the real issue in that part of the world. It will have to be dealt with sooner or later - it will never go away! I update this 2007 story by commenting that Turkey has now invaded northern Iraq and attacked the PKK in force, with thousands of troops, helicopters and aircraft having been involved during February of 2008. The Governments of Iraq and the US were informed of the forthcoming attacks.
