Tibet bursting into flames of protest....
Chinese oficials claimed at least ten people had did in riots in the Tibetan capital of Lhasa - in reality there was obviously many more - the fiercest pro-indopendence protests to have hit th region in over two decades since Chin invaded the kingdom in the early 1950's - damaging China's international image just months before the Beijing Olympic Games. Images have flashed across our television screens on a nightly basis. The Xinhua news agency said there were now ten dead in the bitter clashes that erupted in the remote capital recently - after initially claiming seven were dead. Thevictoms were all inocent civilians ad hd been burned to death, a regional government official claimd - armed police in Lhasa had reportedly rescued more than 580 people, including three Japnese tourists, from banks, supermarkets, schools, and hopitals that had been set alight - more than 160 fires including 40 major blazes were reported. China has accused followers of exiled spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, of masterminding the uprising, which has scarred the image of national harmony in the build-up to the Beijing Olympics, sparking apossibility of boyots if the protests continue. However, many individual sportsmen and women interviewed about the protests stated they were only interested in sport, not politics.
