The world's biggest radio telescope to be built...
Australia is seeking the assistance of neighbour New Zealand in bidding to build the world's biggest radio telescope - a $2.6 billion instrument 50 times more sensitive than existing technology. The Square Kilometre Array intended to be operational by 2020, would be the most sensitive radio instrument built, being able to detect Earth-like leakage at a distance of several hundred to a few thousand light years. It would reportedly consist of a vast array of antennae, arranged in clusters over a distance of more than 3,000 kilometres. The main part is planned to be in western Australia.
