The southern hemisphere professional rugby season has started...
The Southern Hemisphere professional rugby season has started with the commencement of the Super 14 competition between New Zealand, Australian and South African franchises. New Zealand and South Africa field five teams each with Australia fielding four. The first round was held during last weekend and the top Kiwi sides, the Crusaders and the Blues looked awesome playing under new rules which have sped up the game.These rules will most likely involve all of world rugby. THe Crusaders and the Blues are both off to Africa for a few games.These are usually difficult for the non-African teams, especially when they play at high altitude on the veldt. Once the Super 14 competition is over the national teams of the three countries begin their test season, usually with a couple of games agains minor unions before the two round Tri-nations Series. There could actualy be a change this year, with Argentina being invited by the IRB to be added to the competition to form a Four Nations Competition, on the proviso Argentina can guarantee that their top player from Europe and Japan can be released to play in the southern competition.
After their domestic competitions, the southern hemisphere sides wil play end of year test matches against the northern hemisphere teams; New Zealand may well play an extra game to be able to play a grand slam series against the British and Irish teams. It should be an exciting year of rugby for New Zealand teams, after the hugely disappointing Rugby World Cup competition, won by South Africa.
