The invasion of the killer ants...
The invasion of the killer ants... Islanders fear an ant attack - could be a fitting scenario for a movie script in the making: Pot plants have been seen as a threat to Great Barrier Island in the Hauraki Gulf off the Auckland coast in New Zealand amid risk of further infestations of the Argentine ant. Great Barrier Island in Auckland's Hauraki Gulf is pleading with people to wash any plants they take over in an effort to rid the island of the Argentine ant. The insect is described as the world's worst invasive pest and colonies can spread for kilometres causing devastating impacts on horticulture and lifestyle. Great Barrier residents have spent hundreds of hours voluntarily working to rid the island of the ants and the ARC and Department of Conservation is laying bait in infested areas. They want to make sure no fresh ants are shipped over and warn that pot plants are a favourite home for ants. Is an invasion of the killer ants coming?
