The great green wall of China - ecological reform...

Ecological reform - the Great Green Wall of China...

The Great Green Wall of China - a massive ecological project that actually started a number of years ago. But like many things that have have happened in China over the years, information was repressed by the authorities.

Overgrazing, drought, deforestation and over- exploitation of water resources - an obvious world wide problem - are turning vast areas of rural China into a dust bowl.

As a consequence Chinese authorities could be becoming unlikely world leaders by instituting the biggest ecological project ever seen. The programme will be known as the " great green wall" - trees have been planted on an unprecented scale to create a barrier that will stop the encroaching dust bowl in its tracks. Various grasses and shrubs are also being planted to stabilise dusty soils.

The project which actually started in 1978 is halfway through its goal of covering 35 million hectares of land in drought tolerant trees. A most unlikely program that is putting China in the forefront of ecological reform.

Contributor's Note

Some dramatic ecological planning not usually associated with China.
