The Godwits fly off to Alaska...
The bar-tailed Godwits are beginning their long hazardous journey back 11,000 km to Alaska for the northern summer, after spending the southern summer in New Zealand. Thousands of these migratory birds regularly spend the southern summer in NZ.They fly back to Alaska via China for the northern hemisphere summer. About 5oo people gathered at Christchrch's Southshore Spit recently to wtch the first waves take off on their eght day northern trip.
