The case of an egg within an egg - did you hear of such a thing? Maria La Frenais of Auckland, New Zealand, got more than she expected for breakfast recently - an egg inside an egg. She cracked the egg into her pan for her morning fry-up, and out came a very small yolk. But to her amazement there was another fully developed egg in the same shell. She then cracked open that yolk which was the same size as the first. The egg has been described as a freak of nature - it was in a tray of supersized free range eggs. A bird expert and veterinarian, Kevin Turner, said Ms La Frenais' discovery is very odd. There was an egg within an egg discovered in New South Wales in 2004. It was the first Sydney poultry science professor, Tom Scott, had seen in his long 30 year career. His explanation: A normal egg disturbed in the egg gland could move back into the oviduct and start production all over again, resulting in an egg within an egg. Auckland Zoo vet, Berend Westera says the case is extremely rare and defies logic. He has consulted colleagues overseas who who have seen similar things - there are cases documented from the late 1800's to 1945. Simply fascinating! There was an advertising catchcry here in New Zealand a few years ago: " If there is an egg in the house, there is a meal in the house".
