Superhero movie, JLM, to be filmed in New Zealand...
The superhero movie, 'Justice League Mortal' could be filmed in New Zealand, not Australia as first planned. The filming of the big budget movie featuring some of the worlds best known superheroes may move from Australia to New Zealand after it failed to qualify for an Australian tax break. 'Justice League Mortal' includes Batman, Superman, Wonderwoman and The Flash, and had been in pre-production in Sydney, where it was initially going to be shot by Aussie George Miller, who is best known for films such as MAD MAX and HAPPY FEET. But the US$200 million film's producer Barrie Osbourne, who also produced Peter Jackson's LORD OF THE RINGS stated the superheroes film was on hold indefinately. The decision will probably have impact over the Tasman in any case, because a decision had already been made to use Weta Workshop's facilities in Wellington. Some staff had been hired specifically to design costumes for the movie - some of them were now likely to lose their jobs. George Millar had hoped to qualify under Australia's Film Finance Corporation's 40% tax offset - meaning it would be liable to pay less tax. But to qualify a film had to have significant Australian content or to be created and owned by Australians. They would continue to try and qualify, but failing that the movie could be moved to New Zealand, Canada or the US.
