Stolen New Zealand cars being smuggled to middle east...
Stolen cars are being stripped down, packed into containers and smuggled to the middle east - something New Zealand police claim is impossible to prevent. Some cars are sent whole to the Pacific Islands. When concealed with legitimate freight and exports, they are difficult to intercept. Twenty-two thousand cars - one every 25 minutes - are stolen each year, costing the New Zealand insurance industry somewhere about $120 million annually. But 4,000 cars are never recovered, with many ending up overseas or sold in New Zealand with false registration plates. Government plans to microdot all imported cars or parts by next year should reduce the smuggling authorities hope. |
