New Zealand thumps England in the first cricket test by 189 runs...
New Zealand cricket team captain, Daniel Vettori,has hailed his team's defeat over England as the high point so far in his career. The 78 test veteran who took over from Stephen Fleming as captain of NZ, was given credit for his new status, a man of the match award, his batting and bowling performance, and the manner in which the team beat England. He said it was good to step up against a good England team and win decisively, and was his most satisfying test win in a very long time. New Zealand recorded their 65th test win and their eighth against England in 89 tests just before tea on the fifth and final day when Jacob Oram secured the outside of Monty Panesar's bat. It ranks as the best win in over four years, dating back to the nine wicket win against South Africa at Eden Park, Auckland, NZ, in 2004. Newe Zealand had scored 470 runs in the first innings, and left England 300 runs to win in the second innings with 81 overs to play. New Zealand no longer has fast strike bowler in its lineup. It was a great team effort from bowlers and fielders in the second innings, to compare with some magnificent batting in the first innings. There are two more tests to play in this series, the second will start this coming Thursday.
