New Zealand soldier awarded the Victoria Cross for valour in Afghanistan 2004...
New Zealand soldier awarded the Victoria Cross for heroism in Afghanistan in 2004... Corporal Willy Apiata of the NZSAS, New Zealand's special forces, was awarded the VC when he carried a wounded and severely bleeding comrade over 70 meters under fire without regard for his own safety when their vehicle was hit by an explosive during action in Afghanistan in 2004. The wounded man had a cut artery and would have bled to death if Corporal Apiata, then aged 32 years had not carried him to safety and medical treatment. The Victoria Cross is the Commonweath equivalent to the US Medal of Honor. This was the first VC awarded to a serving New Zealander since 1946. He is also only one of thirteen living recipients of the VC worldwide, and one of only two serving holders - the other a British soldier in Iraq also in 2004. He said to his commanding officer in his most honest and modest way," I was only doing my job, boss!" Corporal Apiata, now aged 35 years, will be invested by the NZ Governer General at a special ceremony to be held at Government House later this month. Three of Apiata's comrades will receive bravery awards earned during the some incident, but because of the secrecy that surrounds the SAS in New Zealand, cannot be named. Corporal Apiata was an exception because of his extraordinary feat of bravery under fire in 2004 in Afghanistan. He is no longer serving there. This is indeed a story of Hollywood proportions.
