New Zealand in general. NZ is an island nation in the south west Pacific. The capital is Wellington; the largest city and main port is Auckland. New Zealand is an independent nation and a member of the Commonwealth of Nations. At 268,680 sq km is slightly larger than the United Kingdom and comparable to the Philippines and the state of Colorado. New Zealand is a divese multicultural population of 4 million people, mking it one of the world's least crowded nations. New Zealand's largest minority,the Maori people, are actualy indigenous to East Polynesia, but are accepted as New Zealand's first people; migrating there in the 13th Century.They make up about 15% of the populaion.
