Live donor liver transplants...
Live donor liver transplants were reportedly pioneered in the United states in 1989. Livers, unlike other organs, have the ability to regenerate themselves. Transplants are also of only a half liver. The first live liver transplant operation in New Zealand was between two siblings in 2002. A donor does not necessarily have to be blood related to the recipient, but must have a compatible blood type, and be in good physical and mental shape. The donor should be of similar size or larger than the recipient. While the diseased liver is removed by one team of surgeons, at the same time another is removing the donor liver. The donor operation takes five hours - both surgical teams implant the new half liver into the recipient who is usually in surgery for a total of about ten hours. The donor is usually in extensive care for about 24 hours, and in hospital care for a week. Both half livers - donor and recipient grow to full size in eight weeks. The death risk is minor - 0.5% - 1%. There are other risks such as infection, blood clotting, pneumonia, and allergic reactions to anathaesia. The are occasionally injuries to bile ducts and other organs. |
