Is the shoe now on the other foot in the employment sector these days...
A New Zealand finance and accounting recruitment firm allegedly fired a warning shot at what they labelled lazy and arrogant elements amongst "Generation Y" job seekers. The agency claimed it was shocked when an applicant handed over a list of demands, instead of the usual CV. The woman wanted $15,000 over the going rate, cash for her exam fees and a short contract so that she could do her OE. You can't blame people for trying, but this was ridiculous! An agency spokeswoman said the tight labour market in NZ has left some candidates almost power crazy. It wasn't that long ago job seekers used to care more about crafting their résumé and concentrated on how they came across in interviews. Part of the problem is a generational attitude, a tight labour market is also a factor with candidates knowing they are in the driver's seat. But candidates still have to convince potential employers that they will be an asset to the company. Perhaps the shoe is beginning to be on the other foot after some almost fascist disregard and treatment towards workers during the market-driven madness of the 1990's. Those people belonging to what is known as Generation Y are born around 1980 onwards. Perhaps they have looked at how badly some of their parents generation were treated in the 1990's and are determined to take a more stronger attitude towards employers.
