International day for the Elimination of violence Against Women...
November 25 has now been recognised as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. This day was recognised by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 1999 with a view to raising public awareness of violations of the rights of women. Do you wonder why such a step was deemed necessary?
In many cultures, especially in some Islamic ones, women are viewed and treated as inferior or as second - class citizens. Prejudices against them are allegedly deep- rooted, according to some critics. Gender - based violence in all its forms is an ongoing problem, even in the so-called developed world. According to former U.N. Secretary- General Kofi Annan, " violence against women is global in reach, and takes place in all societies and cultures. It affects women no matter what their race, ethnicity, social origin, birth or other status may be."
This is an indictment against all human societies, especially western society which claims to have a high level of civilization, and because of its continuing criticism of so-called lesser uncivilized societies is guilty of hypocrisy. Violence against women, for the majority of women, has been described as a "taboo issue, invisible in society and a shameful fact of life".
