Green thumbs have strong hands they say...
By Peter Petterson
Gardening provides enough exercise to keep older adults in good shape. And the benefits don't stop there, say researchers at Kansas State University. "As we age, we lose hand strength," said Candice Shoemaker, an asssociate professor of human ecology at the university's Center on Ageing. "Taking cuttings, mixing soil, and potting cuttings involve a lot of hand work." Older adults who are gardeners definately have better strength and pinch force. As a man who had very strong hands most of his life, I agree with this finding that we lose hand strength as we age. I also agree that gardening can help in restoring some of this lost strength. Unfortunately I'm not much of a gardener, and will have to find another way to emulate the gardeners new found hand strength.

Very encouraging. I hear thumbs can help you sleep better too.

So its thumbs up?
One of the best exercises I know for keeping your hands strong is playing tug-of-war with a dog. If that can't be done (you don't have a dog) get a couple of cheap juggling balls and spend a few minutes every so often (several times a day) squeezing them. Green fingers unite . . . . and may they become webbed to aid in swimming!

Keybird usage helps in some ways. Agree with the ball exercises.
As with many things human, Peter, use it or lose it. We have to be more conscious of our physical being and our mental well being as we age. It's too easy, just to sit and rust away. Thank you for sharing. Best wishes. Frederick

You are so right. Use it or lose it is good advice. Regards, Peter
My green thumbs haven't been exercised much of late. I used to do a lot of jewelery making and they got lots of exercise. I did a bit of painting yesterday and today and they cramped up. Ouch! Hi Peter, Neat to be able to say "hi" to another Kiwi!! I was just reading your Intel and you are so right. I'm not sure about the green thumbs bit but I do know you need strong hands and arms when gardening in any real way!! Many times I have come across weeds that really did not want to let go of the space they acquired. :) Only brute strength sometimes, or even maybe a pick sometimes when getting rid of gorse!! We sure thanked those English Gentlemen for bringing that stuff out here, just because it had a pretty yellow flower! We need more thant that I'm afraid. anyway, Peter, lovely to say hello. hope to see more of you and loking at your Intels I giess I will. bless you, Danella
