Endurance athletes to emulate 1890's adventurer's overland trek
Two New Zealand endurance athletes Steve Gurney and Steve Moffat, began a trek across the South Island to retrace the steps and path of 19th adventurer George Park, nearly 120 years ago. With a wooden kayak in tow, Steve Moffat's great-great uncle left from Jacksons, inland of Hokitika on the West Coastin 1889 and spent 13 days travelling the 330 km overland and through rivers to reach Sumner Beach in Christchurch, Canterbury. Steve Gurney will use modern day equipment for the journey, while his companion, Steve Moffat, will replicate his famous ancestor's journey with the real thing - a wooden kayak, paraffin- soaked cotton wet-weather gear, and also the food eaten in the 1890's.
