A statue of former New Zealand PM, William Massey, is creating problems in Northern Ireland where he was born...
A former New Zealand prime minister who emigrated to New Zealand as a 14 year old from Northern Ireland, has a statue erected in his honour in his home town of Limavady, in County Derry. William Massey was prime minister of New Zealand from 1912 until his death in 1925, a long term by todays standards where politicians barely last two or three terms. Because Massey was a hardline Orange Order protestant member until he left Northern ireland as a teenager, locals in his home town want the statue removed from outside the Limavady Town Hall, by the Limavady Borough Council. The recommendations to remove the statue are contained in a council report which supports the abolition of all British and Unionist symbols from concil property. Nationalist Sinn Fein councillors on the Limavady Borough Council are demanding the removal of William Massey's statue to another location. Police were called to angry scenes outside the council building wher a former mayor and her colleague were abused by the hostile crowd opposed to the statue. Mr Massey's great-granddaughter, Claire Massey who is a director of the New Zealand centre for small and medium enterprise research at Massey University's Wellington Campus, said her ancestor could not have been that politically active at the age of 14 years. The statue is to honour the adult achievements of William Massey in his adopted country of New Zealand, and to remind people in the town of Limavady, County Derry, of his achievements 10,000 miles away on the other side of the world. He could well have been a sportsman, a businessman or an achiever in one of the Arts. William Massey's statue is lumped together with other items theSinn fein councillors want 'rehoused', including a Charled and Diana wedding mug,a Charles and Diana wedding mug, a Royal British Legion certificate and crockery given to the townby visiting British soldiers. Limavady was, apparently, a former garrison town used by the British Army in the early days. It is all rather strange considering that Northern Ireland is now united politically, and such actions are those of the past. Perhaps William Massey's statue could be sent to New Zealand, and be located outside one of the Massey University campuses, named after him. |
