A New Zealand initiative for biofuels... NZ Government is to encourage ethanol blends in petrol here... A decision by the NZ Environmental Risk Management Authority will remove a financial barrier to the introduction of ethanol petrol blends, stated the Energy Minister recently. The authority decided recently to allow blends containing up to 10% ethanol in single skinned underground tanks. In February the government announced a phased introduction of biofuels from 2008 that would require 3.4% of the total fuel sold by oil companies to be biofuel by 2012. This is actually great news with a future decrease of carbon emissions into the atmosphere,and conservation of petroleum products in this country. Our ethanol manufacture would most likely be a by-product of our timber industry. Since I originally wrote this there have been a number of international initiatives in this area - this is most pleasing and shows growing support for the concept of ethanol and biofuels. One from Thailand uses cooking oils to fuel police cars. Contributor's Note International initiatives on the manufacture of ethanol and biofuels shows the international community is using the same songsheet for creating alternatives to oil products.
