A new breed of heroes - people who spend their lives searching for new knowledge... A new breed of heroes - people who spend their lives searching for new knowledge and intellectual horizons. More New Zealand universities have achieved awards for new research this year - New Zealand's premier science awards for wide ranging research into x-rays, Kiwifruit enzymes and milk proteins. Professor Ted Bakerwas awarded the Rutherford Medal at the Royal Society of New Zealand ceremony in Auckland recently. The medal is named after Ernest Lord Rutherford who introduced the first world nuclear research in the early 20th Century. He is the first scientist outside of North America and Europe to work out the structure of protein - his work has been used by American researchers to develop anti- malarial drugs. The Royal Society CEO Steve Thompson described the award winners as New Zealand's new breed of heroes! These are people who spend their lives searching for new knowledge that expands our intellectual horizons, gives us technologies as yet unthought of and ultimately helps humanity to better understand itself. Other award winners including Canterbury University's Professor Murray McEwan who won the Pickering Medal for technology innovation. The Lily Medal for health and medical sciences went to Professor Lianne Woodward of Canterbury University for her work on how neonatal imaging can be used to improve the health of premature babies. This research is of world wide significance, even if coming from a small nation such as New Zealand which punches above its weight in sciences as in sports.
